With more than 100 recipes for teen and family favorites such as Pizza, Mac ‘n’ Cheese, Grilled Cheese, Sweet Potato Fries, and Almond Streusel Coffee Cake, Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen proves that teens and their families don’t have to sacrifice on foods, flavor, or convenience to eat gluten-free.

Sarah Berghoff McClure practically grew up in the kitchens of Chicago’s historic Berghoff Restaurant, where wheat-filled German-American favorites such as schnitzels, spaetzles, strudels, and rye bread are staples. When Sarah was diagnosed with Celiac disease, she thought her days of eating her favorite pizzas, pastas, and pastries with her friends were over. Her mother, Carlyn Berghoff, chef/owner of the Berghoff Restaurant, stepped in, and together, she and Sarah began creating gluten-free versions of teen-friendly foods that Sarah could enjoy.

Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen offers a unique perspective on living gluten-free, not only from the view of someone living with gluten-intolerance but also from a parent who is a chef, and from a doctor, Susan Nelson, who specializes in treating teens and others with Celiac disease.

Cooks&Books&Recipes Featured Cook EA on Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen:

As the mom of two pre-teens, who are becoming more and more independent in their food choices everyday, I was thrilled to receive a copy of the cookbook Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen: Everyday Foods the Whole Family Will Love to review for Cooks&Books&Recipes.

I enjoyed reading Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen not only for the tasty and easy teen-friendly recipes, but also for the informative gluten-free lifestyle information provided at the beginning of the book by the authors {a chef/mother/restaurateur, her teenage daughter/celiac, a pediatric gastroenterologist, and a food writer/recipe developer}, including “The Top Thirty Foods {Gluten-Free} Kids Miss Most,” “Eating Out: School, Restaurants, and Away from Home,” and more.

Since this is a cookbook geared to teenagers, I asked my 12-year-old daughter to choose a recipe to cook with me. Her choices? Spaghetti and Meatballs, Macaroni and Cheese, Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes, Glazed Baked Doughnuts, and Yellow Cake! In the end, we decided to make the Macaroni and Cheese {very tasty and easy to make!} and the Chicken Noodle Soup.

Although I really enjoyed the book, as a produce-loving registered dietitian and nutritionist, I would have loved seeing more fruits and veggies added to recipes in the cookbook and perhaps suggestions for cutting back on, or replacing, some of the heavy cream with whole milk in several of the recipes.

Overall, though, my family and I enjoyed everything we made, and I like that the authors emphasize eating a well-balanced, whole-foods-based diet that includes a variety of minimally processed, naturally gluten-free foods, along with gluten-free alternatives for traditional “gluten-full” foods. If you are looking for a cookbook and resource book to add to your gluten-free library, I highly recommend Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen: Everyday Foods the Whole Family Will Love.
